Miracle in Nigeria:
A Widow’s Story of Triumph Over Tragedy
Thanks to your generosity, Nigerian widows receive new life and hope for their future
In Nigeria, tragedy is unfolding across a nation that many in the United States perceive as prosperous. The culprit? Islamic extremists who are destroying entire villages, particularly those in Christian regions. In one village, armed Muslims brutally murdered almost all the men. In the aftermath of this violence, widows and their children were left desperate with no means of support.
Nigeria is now ranked seventh in the world for anti-Christian persecution. Open Doors reports, “More believers are killed for their faith in Nigeria than anywhere else in the world.” The rise of Islamic extremism has tragically increased the number of Nigerian widows, with estimates ranging from 8 million to a staggering 20 million.
There’s tremendous grief when any woman, anywhere, loses her husband. But for a Nigerian widow, life is brutal. She has no rights and is left with nothing. Many are kidnapped and sold to sex traffickers.
Broken to Radiant
So many widows and their children are in desperate need; it’s overwhelming. Yet because of supporters like you who live out James 1:27 to “visit orphans and widows in their affliction,” World Challenge is reaching abandoned women in their darkest hour. One of these women is Buttercup. Her adopted name perfectly represents her story of triumph over loss.
Buttercup was abandoned by her alcoholic mother and neglected by her grandmother. Feeling the pain of loneliness and neglect, she longed for love and acceptance. This led her into a life of drug addiction and sexual abuse. One man offered to marry her, only to use her in his sex trafficking “business”. Miraculously, she escaped from her husband, but the cycle of addiction led her to another trafficker. She felt trapped.

Then, Buttercup suffered a stroke that affected her speech. Her abuser callously threw her out. Buttercup felt hopeless with no place to go, but God had a plan for her life. Caring Christians in her region took her in, providing her with a safe place to sleep, nutritious meals, clothing, and medical care. They even arranged for rehabilitation so that she could learn to speak again.
Her speech guide showed her a photo of a field filled with beautiful yellow flowers directed toward the sun. “The first word I was asked to say was buttercup,” she recalled. “This made me use different parts of my mouth and tongue. It was not easy.”
Gazing at the photo, Buttercup wanted to run through that field of yellow blossoms with her arms lifted high, singing praises to God. “Buttercups are wildflowers, yet radiant in their beauty. I, too, am an ordinary broken woman, yet God’s beautiful flower. I want to bask in his amazing love forever. He is my sun,” she rejoiced.
Now with her new name, Buttercup radiates the light of God’s love. Despite all the tragedy she has experienced, she can now smile with joy from the Lord. Today, she dedicates her life to helping the Christians who rescued her in restoring other women who have been widowed or abandoned.
Lives Are Being Transformed
Thanks to our faithful partners, Buttercup is among the 550 Nigerian widows (and 220 orphans) who are being cared for and discipled to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. The women also receive educational and vocational training, including skills such as sewing and soap-making, to better their economic future.
While visiting these rescued widows, John Bailey, World Challenge’s Chief Missions Officer, was incredibly moved by the change in their lives. “These are very strong women who have endured lives of brokenness and hurt, but God has done a work to heal them,” John acknowledged. “They are transformed, and it’s beautiful to see.”
Because of you, lives are being transformed! Your support equips World Challenge to help our Christian brothers and sisters in rescuing and ministering to the most vulnerable. Yet so many more need our care, not only in Nigeria but around the world.
This Christmas, join the World Challenge family as we rescue those who are neglected and in need of restoration. Even halfway around the world, you can make a difference in the lives of those in need.
