Empowering Widows in Africa’s Forgotten Places

Imagine being just 30 years old, standing in a small, dilapidated, dusty home, grappling with the unimaginable loss of your husband. The weight of heartache sits heavy on your shoulders as you prepare to share the devastating news with your four little ones, their innocent faces staring back at you with tears in their eyes.

This deeply personal tragedy unfolds in one of the poorest regions of Africa, a place where hope feels so distant. Here, the shadow of despair looms large; 2.6 million children are caught in a heartbreaking cycle of severe malnutrition, their tiny bodies yearning for the basics of survival.

It’s a story that echoes with urgency. It is a call for compassion, resilience, and a united effort to bring light to the world’s darkest corners. How can we look beyond the numbers and connect with the souls behind them, sparking a wave of change, hope, and healing?

Mariam, a young mother of four in the troubled nation of Burkina Faso, faced the daunting reality of raising her children alone after the loss of her husband. She wondered how she would feed and provide for her kids. With no money, job, or prospects, her hope seemed to have vanished. With little education and no job skills, she became desperate and found herself on the streets, begging to keep her children alive.

Sadly, there are tens of thousands of women like Mariam nationwide. Yet because you listened to God’s call to partner in this work, Mariam and 100 other widows in dire need now receive food, financial assistance, and access to a gospel community. They are experiencing the love of Jesus in action.

World Challenge is committed to providing life-changing support and essential supplies to thousands of widows in some of the world’s most impoverished, war-torn, and underserved regions. Your support has enabled us to increase our efforts to assist those in desperate need. We now serve 18,000 widows and orphans.

Thanks to your generosity, these widows in a troubled African nation now have food for their children. We provided 7.5 tons of food! World Challenge didn’t stop there, though; we also gave goats to many of these families, enabling the widows to start goat farming businesses. The smiles on the faces of these widows and the gratitude of their once-hungry children are a testament to your kindness. They are grateful for the outpouring of your gifts, but the needs continue, and the suffering is extensive. Many more are in desperate need!
