A Shaken Nation: Ministering to Orphans in Troubled Myanmar
Thousands of orphans in Myanmar need food, water, shelter, and the love of Jesus.
Formerly known as Burma, Myanmar has had a long history of turmoil. A military coup took place in 2021 and more recently, in March 2025, a destructive 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook the country, resulting in thousands of deaths. Many lacked access to clean water, food, shelter, and other necessities.
For the thousands of orphans in Myanmar, political unrest and natural disaster have left them struggling to survive. This is the case at three orphanages caring for more than 400 orphans. Thanks to World Challenge partners on the ground, these orphans can receive the resources they need to thrive, hear the gospel message, and, with God’s help, see a brighter future.
One team in Myanmar has served in the country for years and knows firsthand the difficulties faced by orphans. One of our team members shared, “I went to one of the villages to share the good news. I asked two emaciated children about their condition (they could not walk). Their parents died from drug use and they were being cared for by their 9-year-old brother.”

Children at two Myanmar orphanages, recently relocated for their safety due to fighting in the country. World Challenge partners provide the children with food, shelter, education, medical aid, and Christ’s love. These orphanages need wells for fresh water.
The children were brought under the care of one of our partner orphanages, where medical support and a healthy diet helped them at a critical time. A year later one of the children was able to walk. One team member said, “By the grace of God, they are now happy in our orphanage and can go to school!” The children have accepted the Lord and are also active in a church associated with the orphanage.
We praise God for the salvation of these three orphans but also realize that many more need God’s compassion and care. The goal is to see that these and other orphans are placed in loving Christian homes. Without assistance, many of these orphans will not survive long or will end up in worse situations, living on the streets, involved in crime, or even being trafficked for profit.
Thanks to the prayers and support of people like you, orphans in Myanmar have opportunities to not only receive Christ, but also turn their lives around in amazing ways!
