Hope for the Fatherless

In South Sudan, your compassion is rewriting the stories of orphans from desperation to new beginnings.

South Sudan is described as a desperate place. For those who have visited the East African nation, it’s often difficult to put into words the sheer devastation brought by war, severe weather, disease, and starvation. Thousands of children have lost their parents due to terrorism, tribal violence, and illness. For a South Sudanese orphan, hunger is constant, and life is full of hardship.

Yet thanks to compassionate donors, orphaned children who were once vulnerable are now growing strong, resilient, and full of hope. This generosity is not just meeting needs; it’s transforming lives.

Let me introduce you to Daniel and Deng: two boys whose stories powerfully demonstrate how Christ-centered care can restore broken lives and build a future marked by strength and resilience.

Daniel

Before help reached him, Daniel experienced tragedy and grief beyond what any child should endure. The conflict in South Sudan took the lives of both of his parents. With nowhere else to go, Daniel was taken in by distant relatives who, despite their kindness, were barely surviving themselves. In a home where every meal was uncertain, Daniel often went to bed with an empty stomach. Hunger began to drain his strength, as well as the vibrant energy a boy his age should have shown.

School was no longer a possibility without money for fees, a uniform, or basic supplies. While other children learned and played, Daniel spent his days working to help the household and worrying about where his next meal would come from. Without nourishment, education, and the comfort of parental love and care, Daniel’s future was fading at such a young age.

But today, 10-year-old Daniel is full of hope thanks to our partner who welcomed him into their care. For the first time, he no longer has to worry about his next meal. Through the program, he receives nutritious meals and clean drinking water. With each passing day, his strength returned, and his health and energy are now restored. And happily, Daniel has also returned to school to continue his education.

But beyond physical and educational support, Daniel has found a sense of family and belonging with the other children. Through weekly discipleship, the children gather to learn about God’s love, pray, sing, and are encouraged. During one of these gatherings, Daniel was asked about his hopes and dreams. He stated, “I want to study hard and help other children.”

Through the generosity of World Challenge donors, Daniel has found what every child longs for—to feel valued, cared for, and hopeful about his future.

Daily nutrition has helped to strengthen Daniel’s health.

Deng

Like Daniel, Deng’s life was also marked by hardship and uncertainty. After losing his parents at a young age, he was left with no home and without anyone to care for or protect him. All alone, Deng spent his days wandering the streets and begging for food to survive. This left him weak and vulnerable. With no access to school, no stability, and no guidance, Deng’s future and survival were uncertain. He was also in constant danger of abuse, sex trafficking, and forced labor.

Deng’s life began to change when a relative noticed his difficult struggle and brought him to the care center. The ministry staff welcomed him in, listened to his story, and recognized his urgent need for care and attention.

Since that day, Deng’s life has been steadily transformed. He is now able to count on nutritious food every day to gain strength and energy. He attends classes where he is learning how to read and write. Each lesson helps develop important skills and builds his confidence for his future.

At 13 years old, Deng is in a safe place, surrounded by caring teachers and other children his age. Through discipleship and times of prayer, he is learning about faith, hope, and his value in God’s eyes.

“I am very happy that the center accepted me. Every day I come to the feeding center for classes and a meal.” Deng used to cope with constant sadness, but his comments tell a different story. But now his comments tell a different story. He’s happy and confident, and his life is filled with possibilities within a community that cares for him.

Deng’s improved health has given him confidence and hope for his future.

Restoring Hope

In one of the world’s most impoverished nations, two lives marked by loss and hardship are now being rewritten with hope, healing, and the promise of a brighter future. What was once a story of survival is turning into one of restoration.

There is still the constant reality of hardship in a country like South Sudan. Our ministry partners request prayer for peace and stability, protection for their staff and volunteers, and sustainable funding to reach more orphans, widows, and a starving population. Will you pray for this nation and for the Christians there who risk their lives to care for those in need?

Would you also consider a gift to rescue and restore more lives with World Challenge? A simple gift of $40 a month can provide a safe home, essential nutrition, education, medical care, and the hope of the gospel.

It’s hard to fully capture the depth of God’s mercy that reaches into places marked by poverty, hunger, and the scars of war. But it’s a joyful feeling to be part of the family of God, responding with love to “defend the fatherless and plead the widow’s case” (see Isaiah 1:17).
