A Beacon of Hope amid Nigeria’s Genocide

Christians are rescuing orphans and widows in the devastating aftermath of terrorist attacks by Islamic extremists

Picture a life overshadowed by the constant threat of Muslim extremists invading your community, killing your loved ones, or abducting women and children for ransom. This is the grim reality in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation!

In a country where nearly 50% of the population is Christian, the radical agenda to turn Nigeria into a Muslim nation is being enacted through the persecution and killing of Christians and the dismantling of political structures. Since 2009, it is estimated that Islamist militia groups have murdered 125,000 Nigerian Christians, and 20,000 churches have been attacked and burned. Last year alone, more than 7,000 people were killed for their faith. This is not just a crisis; it’s a “genocide,” while the government of Nigeria looks the other way, refusing to admit to the ongoing religious persecution.

At World Challenge, our mission is to go where the light of the gospel is most dim and the despair of the persecuted and vulnerable is most grave. Tragically, this describes the dire situation in Nigeria. However, there is hope! We have been partnering with Nigerian Christians who are radically devoted to caring for orphans and widows in the midst of this terrifying crisis.

From Islam to Christianity

Meet Pastor David Muhammed, a beacon of hope for orphans and widows in Nigeria. He established an organization to rescue orphans and support widows who have lost their husbands to Islamic jihadists. His dedication to this mission stems from his own childhood, having been raised by a widow and experiencing poverty.

David was born in a strict Muslim family in northern Nigeria. When David was three, his father passed away, leaving his mother without financial means to care for David and his younger sister. Despite many struggles in his childhood, David completed his high school education and found work in Abuja, the capital city. It was during this time that a man shared the gospel of Jesus with David. “Where I come from, it’s an abomination for anyone to convert from Islam to Christianity. A person will be killed,” David replied to the man. The man prayed for David that he wouldn’t be killed and that his family would not harm him. Despite fearing for his life, David accepted Jesus as his Savior and began attending a church to deepen his Christian faith.

“Where I come from, it’s an abomination for anyone to convert from Islam to Christianity. A person will be killed,” David replied to the man.

Still without a stable job or a college education, David struggled to secure a future for himself. He prayed and fasted, crying out to God for direction in his life. While praying, he felt God guide him to the promise in scripture, “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten…You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied…[You] shall never again be put to shame” (Joel 2:25-26, ESV).

Miraculously, God provided a way for David to attend university. Today, he is not only a lawyer but also the pastor of a church that supports his organization in ministering to orphans and widows. Through the faithful support of Christians, David and his team help widows start businesses, empowering them to provide for their children. David shared, “This is a childhood dream. It’s the passion of a young man who was raised by a widow and who understands the plight of widows and orphans.”

David’s courageous testimony shines a light in a dark corner of the world. As a former Muslim who now professes his faith in Jesus Christ, he is reaching out to orphans and widows to draw them to the gospel. His story is a powerful testament to God’s faithfulness in the midst of adversity and a reminder that God is sovereign, even over the wickedness in Nigeria.

Centers of Care and Refuge

Through your generosity, World Challenge partners with Pastor David to reach those who have been displaced and tragically affected by the genocidal violence against Christians. But they need financial assistance to provide for the orphans and widows in their care. Will you pray about what the Lord will have you give?

Your gift of $40, $60, $100, or more will help provide a safe living environment, nutritious meals, education, healthcare, and biblical discipleship so that abandoned orphans and widows will know the life-changing hope and love of Jesus Christ. Your support is not just crucial; it’s the key to rescuing orphans and widows who have been chased from their communities by Islamic extremists.

In a prayer of dedication, Pastor David and his team lifted up the orphans and widows who will find refuge within the walls of a future care center: “Father, thank you for the widows and orphans whose joy will be restored. May their hopelessness be transformed into hope through this project.”

Through your partnership, we pray that more testimonies like David’s will come from these care centers, not just in Nigeria but around the world. That multitudes will be saved, and that orphans and widows will not only be cared for but also discipled. May they go on to share the truth and peace of the gospel of Jesus Christ that transforms the darkest situations into his glorious light!
