A charitable organization established by a Finnish woman received the President’s Export Award. Caring Hands was established by a Fida International missionary, a Finnish-Canadian woman named Milla Happonen. The paper jewelry Caring Hands produces bring self esteem and creates a source of income for HIV positive women. The award was presented by Uganda’s president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Friday, October 3, 2008 in Kampala.

The recognition was given to the pioneering work that is being done on behalf of the poor. Caring Hands trains women to make paper beads in the suburbs of Kampala. Those making the beads are HIV positive, widows, single mothers, and unemployed. The women are also trained in literacy, health and how to handle their finances. When they are financially independent, they feel they are full members of society.
The paper bead jewelry supports sustainable development because they are made from recycled material – paper from magazines and posters. The jewelry is sold around the world in many countries. The beads are also adorned by the “Princess of Africa,” the famous South African artist and advocate Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Also, the winner of American Idols in 2007, Jordin Sparks wears Caring Hands jewelry.
Caring Hands began two years ago through a small gesture of love for neighbors when a group of volunteers decided to distribute food at Christmas for Kampala’s needy. Caring Hands was established to break the cycle of poverty that would go beyond the food relief. “During childhood, my family experienced life-transforming charity that totally changed the direction of our lives. I would like to forward the same type of blessing to others,” states Milla Happonen who has worked in Uganda with her family since 1995.
