Gospel Power in Global Crisis Zonesby World Challenge Staff | October 3, 2011 |

In drought–stricken Africa, 12 million people are in a life–and–death battle to find enough food. In Haiti, tens of thousands of earthquake victims live in heat–saturated, flood–prone tents. Natural disasters, civil wars, orphaned children, slave trafficking — in crisis zones all over the world, the awful toll of human suffering is staggering.
Yet in a world filled with endless bad news and unbearable crises there shines a great light. Jesus is sending forth missionaries to serve the poor and needy in crisis, helping them find a light of hope in their darkest times. For the past forty years World Challenge missions have built orphanages, launched feeding programs, supported schools and funded medical care in troubled nations. Through these dedicated works, Jesus is transforming individuals, families and even whole communities.

In rural villages in El Salvador, thousands of mothers have lost babies during childbirth. This is mainly due to terrible living conditions. World Challenge has helped launch a campaign in a dozen Salvadoran mountain villages to improve living conditions and to teach families healthy practices.
The practical result
In many villages infant mortality has dropped from 47 to 2 per 1,000. New homes have been built, 80 percent of the region now have access to clean water, and food supplies meet the needs of hungry children.
The spiritual result
Villagers' faith is being renewed and they are sharing their love for Christ. Churches are reaching out to the lost and seeing many come to Jesus.
Cambodia
In Cambodia, millions of people live well below the poverty line. In some regions people have no clean water, insufficient food and no access to education. The majority of rural villages have never heard the name of Jesus, and most areas have no church where they can hear the gospel. God has opened a great door of opportunity for World Challenge to reach deep into these impoverished areas. We have partnered with Cambodian locals to send missionaries into unreached villages to care for the needy and to preach the gospel.

Many of those suffering in poverty now receive regular medical care and education. Families are taught farming skills to help them become self–sufficient. Entire villages, once ravaged by despair, are being renewed with hope.
The spiritual result
Through these works, thousands are hearing the gospel for the first time. The hopeless are given hope, churches are being planted and whole villages are opening up to the gospel.
The vast and glorious power of Christ's gospel is unleashing a movement of good news amid the world's trouble areas. Jesus reigns triumphant over every famine, flood and crisis. And his mercy shines unhindered, with thousands of lives and entire communities being changed by his abundant love.
