We recently visited one of our partner schools in Kenya – the Mathare Light Academy in the Mathare 4A slum of Nairobi. When we arrived we were greeted by the laughter and smiles of the joyful children that stood out in stark contrast to the surrounding poverty and despair.

The school is led by Pastor David Matinde. Sensing a calling to the children of this slum, Pastor David and his wife have worked tirelessly for the past 12 years to be a light in the darkness and reach the children and families of this slum with the gospel. Currently, 232 children are enrolled, being fed, educated and hearing the gospel. As a result, many of the families have started attending the local church. Now whole families are hearing the good news of Jesus Christ.

Please Pass the Bread provides food for the children at the school, feeding them twice per day, 5 days per week. As Pastor David explains: “When they come from home, some of the children come without eating breakfast. In fact, most of the time they don’t get supper. The meals they eat at school, when they go back home they sleep like that and the parents are content to know that tomorrow, my child will go to school and have a meal. The children are today healthier and stronger, and they thrive even in class because of the food they eat.”
