In Guatemala, a group of adults busy themselves fabricating wood frames they will eventually sell. In Portugal, a similar group runs a metal shop, a laundry and a bakery. In Siberia, adults make jewelry for income and mentor the young people who assist them. In Swaziland, a group of families—some of whom have HIV/AIDs, including children—cultivate land and participate in a fish farm. Groups in Kenya and Israel are equally industrious.

Kenya is one of Africa’s most imperiled nations, a land of constant and utter need. Drought and famine beget poverty…poverty begets a daily scramble for food…and malnutrition multiplies the dire medical needs.

This past year the nation of Africa continued to see hungry children die in their mothers arms, babies suffering with HIV/AIDS, civil wars, and economic meltdowns. Yet in the midst of this horrific darkness stand men and women of God

For over forty years World Challenge has been feeding, clothing, educating and meeting the needs of thousands of poor children, orphans and prisoners in strategic areas around the world.

The task God has assigned to us here at World Challenge is to bring God’s love to the poorest of the poor around the globe.

It seemed, at least for a time, that Kenya might escape the violent and disastrous fate that has plagued its neighboring countries. But frighteningly, this once tranquil African nation is now on the brink of utter disaster.

One billion people in the world live in impoverished nations without safe drinking water. The markets in their slums sell sour milk, tainted chicken and spoiled meat. They are dying of starvation. They wear worn-out shoes and ragged clothes, and travel extraordinary distances for food, water and employment. Only one percent of them ever go to college, and most can’t even sign their own names.
