The writer of Hebrews says to his readers, “By this time you ought to be teachers” (Hebrews 5:12, my paraphrase). These are strong, bold words. Who exactly is the writer addressing here? In short, who is he rebuking? The book of Hebrews shows us he is speaking to believers who have been well-schooled in biblical truth. In other words, those reading this letter had sat under powerful preaching by many anointed ministers. Consider all these Christians had been taught:

Dearly Beloved:

MERCY AND GRACE TO ALL WHO BELIEVE!

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

Those who have walked with the Lord for any length of time know that prayer is essential to spiritual life. Sadly, many Christians believe this as a doctrine and as the secret for their daily supply of strength to endure — yet they seldom “come to the throne” to obtain mercy and find grace to help them in their hour of need.

What it Means to Live by One’s Faith

If God decides to chasten a nation because of their sins how should the church respond? We have to have a proper Holy Ghost view and not respond with or own zeal. The church must begin to plead to God to obtain mercy and grace. God judges sin in mercy and in His loving kindness will send forth His Spirit to renew the face of the earth. In these times of calamity, we as Christians must settle the issue, God is at work! The church of Jesus Christ shall prevail.

By Now You Ought to Be Teachers

How many sermons do we need to hear before we simply take God at His Word? There comes a time that we can become gospel hardened because we don’t allow our heart to respond in faith to the Word of God. We are called to be living epistles read and known to all men. Now is the time to allow our lives to be an example of the faithfulness of God. It is time to let our family and those around us take notice because we have an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. You may be the only Bible your neighbors will ever read.

I am convinced the Lord is trying to break through to his people as never before.

As Scripture predicts, the devil has come down with great wrath, knowing his time is short. And right now God’s people need a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit, a supernatural touch even greater than the one at Pentecost.

Dearly Beloved:

“…SUCH AS I HAVE, I GIVE TO YOU” (see Acts 3:6).

Peter and John went to the temple to pray. Near the gate called “Beautiful,” they came upon a crippled beggar who asked for a handout. This man had been crippled since birth, and daily he was carried to that spot to beg for alms. Peter and John fixed their gazes on him and said, “Look on us. Silver and gold have we none, but such as we have, we give to you. Rise up and walk.” The man was instantly healed, jumping up and dancing into the temple.

When I began working on this message, the Wall Street Journal reported that the entire world had come under a great cloud of fear. People in all nations are now paralyzed by world events. Immediately, my thoughts turned to our parishioners at Times Square Church. They show no such fear. Instead, while we all have a great soberness about these times, we also have a deep, abiding joy.

Dearly Beloved:

“PASTOR DAVID, YOU SPEAK SO MUCH ABOUT HARD TIMES COMING. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? I'VE BEEN LIVING HARD TIMES FOR YEARS.”

These words came to me by mail from a frustrated prisoner who has been reading my messages for a number of years. He was not condemning me; he simply said he was just very tired of years of hard times and prayed for some good news.

A Call to Anguish

Anguish is extreme pain, distress, or sorrow. Whatever happened to anguish in the house of God? You don’t hear about it in this pampered age. More of the world is coming into, and taking over, the church than the church is impacting the world. So many times we say to God, "This time you’ve touched me for life. I’ll never be the same." It’s just all fireworks, a loud band and a lot of noise, and then it dies. All true passion is born out of anguish.
