The first 10 years of young Chey’s* life were nothing but spiritual and emotional despair. Born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia he grew up illiterate and was quickly moving toward the traditional curse of the uneducated poor: begging, stealing, or selling himself to simply survive one day to the next.
Chey’s family was forced to live on less than a dollar a day, leaving Chey hungry, undernourished and lonely. He spent the first ten years of his life virtually without being touched. His soul longed to be touched by love.
It would not be farfetched to say that the vast majority of the 13.6 million Cambodian souls are equally untouched. Generations of vile religious practices, followed by severe Communist indoctrination, have left this nation in spiritual and emotional despair.
All of that changed for Chey this past year. He received a scholarship to the Salamom School, where he joined 300 thriving Cambodian children who are being touched by the love of Jesus. These young ones are fed and clothed while being educated by caring and dedicated teachers. They are breaking free of the curse, and are headed for a future with promise.
Tragically, the majority of the Salamom School’s funding was cut recently. Upon learning of this, World Challenge committed to helping to keep this soul-touching, life-changing school in operation. Only three percent of Cambodia knows the gospel, and schools like Salamom offer life and hope not just to students and their families but to whole communities.
Would you join us in continuing to make this vital school a reality to children like Chey? We are looking for several mission-minded pastors whose churches may be interested in helping serve in the needy nation of Cambodia. If interested, please fill out our online questionnaire.
