COVER LETTER
Dearly Beloved:
I want to speak to you about THE CROSS PURCHASING THE FULLNESS OF GOD’S LOVE FOR YOU!
“I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:26).
THESE ARE AMONG THE LAST WORDS OF JESUS ON EARTH, AND WE NEED TO PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO EVERY WORD.
What an incredible word it is. Listen carefully to Christ’s desire for us, especially those of us enduring troubling times: “That the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
CAN WE DARE BELIEVE SUCH AN AWESOME PROMISE? I believe if we could lay hold of this truth it would be an anchor, a continual source of joy and peace for us. Imagine it, the very same love — the same intensity and fullness — that God showed his Son can be ours! Not a lesser love — not just a reflection of that love — but the very same, all-inclusive love the Father poured out on Jesus while on earth.
You see, Jesus’ death on the cross was not just so that we one day would ascend to glory. It was also that the full love of God would descend on us the same way it rested on him. We believe that when we die we will be translated into the presence of God and the Lamb — and there we will experience eternal love. Yet we have undervalued the power of Christ’s blood. The fact is Jesus’ atonement opened up the floodgates of the Father’s love to all who are in Christ at this very hour.
As Jesus was about to depart the earth, he prayed that the mighty flow of love he reveled in would remain. He would not take away with him the love of the Father but would extend it to his beloved on earth to the very end of time. Therefore it is not “some day” when we shall know and experience the fullness of the Father’s love — it is now! Moreover, Christ’s blood did not purchase merely a taste of the Father’s love; it is not a love that rises in value. Jesus’ blood purchased the full value now!
HOW CAN GOD LOVE US AS HE LOVED HIS OWN SON? HOW CAN ONE SO HOLY AND UNDEFILED LOVE US WHO ARE SO WEAK, SO PRONE TO SIN, SO UNWORTHY?
All these objections were settled at the cross. The price Jesus paid for evildoers was the same price that supplies the Father’s full love to every servant facing sorrows, temptations and afflictions. All believers will face in this life what Jesus faced: rejection, loss, satanic attacks. At times it can be hard for us to believe we are loved, especially when we’re in dire circumstances. But suffering is not proof we are not fully loved as Christ was.
Consider these final words: “AND I IN THEM.” Jesus was saying, in essence, “Father, see me in them! And treat them as you treated me. Love me in them. Extend to them the same love AFTER THE CROSS AS BEFORE THE CROSS.”
Here is my prayer: “Lord, teach me to recognize you in me.”
